Mining Industry Human Resources Council Provides $60,000 in Scholarships to Cambrian College Students
A national organization devoted to leading collaboration to address the human resource and labour market challenges facing Canada’s mining sector has given a number of scholarships to Cambrian College students.
The Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) has provided approximately $60,000 in scholarships to 20 students in Cambrian’s Mining Engineering Technology and Industrial Mechanical Millwright Technician programs.
The funding comes from MiHR’s Financial Scholarship Support Program, which is part of its Mining Sector Skills and Solutions Strategy for the Clean Economy (M4S).
“In order for Canada’s mining industry to support the transition to a clean economy, the sector needs a robust pipeline of qualified and skilled workers to support expansion and avoid ongoing labour shortages,” explains Ryan Montpellier, MiHR’s Executive Director. “Yet, Canada’s mining talent pipeline is shrinking. The Financial Scholarship Support Program shows students they are supported in mining programs and that they can help Canada be the world leader in safe, sustainable mining.”
Each student received approximately $3,000. One of those students was Tayler Hourtovenko from Sudbury, a second-year student in Cambrian’s Mining Engineering Technology program.
“I want to go into a field with sustainability,” says Hourtovenko. “Mining is going to be around for a long time; it is not going to disappear anytime soon. Our economy depends on it.”
Carter Lacasse of Espanola also received a MiHR scholarship. He is also in the second year of the Mining Engineering Technology program.
“I have a lot of family members and friends who work in the mining sector,” adds Lacasse. “There are a lot of job opportunities, and it is a well-paying career.”
MiHR is an independent, non-profit organization that is Canada’s knowledge centre for mining labour market information. MiHR works with industry, labour, educational institutions and Indigenous groups to understand labour market trends, identify opportunities and develop solutions.
