Did you know one of the most exciting historic sites in British Columbia is celebrating a major milestone in 2025? The Britannia Mine Museum, a multi-award-winning heritage destination nestled along the stunning Sea to Sky corridor, is turning 50-years-old – and you’re invited to join the celebration.
What started as a pioneering mining community carved out of the rugged mountainside, soon evolved into one of the largest copper-producing mines in the World. Over its 70 years of operation, more than 60,000 people lived and worked in the area – creating a vibrant, self-sufficient community that was ahead of its time, with amenities like a hospital, school, recreation centre, and even a swimming pool!
When the mine’s final whistle blew on November 1st, 1974, it marked the end of a chapter, but not the end of the story.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of local advocates, support from the mining industry, and contributions from both federal and provincial governments, the Britannia Beach Historical Society stepped in to preserve the site. In 1975, the mine reopened its doors to the public as the British Columbia Museum of Mining (later renamed the Britannia Mine Museum). Since then, it’s been welcoming visitors from all over the world who come to connect with British Columbia’s rich industrial and community heritage.

A museum that brings history to life
Today, the Britannia Mine Museum is a place where the past meets the present – and where history is anything but boring. It’s a living museum that invites visitors to see, touch, hear, and even feel what life was like in a real mining town.
With the help of passionate and knowledgeable historic interpreters, every visit becomes a journey back in time. Whether you’re a history buff, a curious explorer, or a family looking for a memorable day out, there’s something here for everyone.

Step into Mill No. 3, the museum’s awe-inspiring centrepiece and a National Historic Site in its own right. This towering, 20-storey building once processed ore from the mine and is now home to the award-winning BOOM! show – a cutting-edge, multi-sensory experience that brings the mill roaring back to life.
Using state-of-the-art sound, lighting, and projection technology, the BOOM! show lets you witness the power, scale, and impact of this incredible facility. With over 30 speakers, immersive visuals, and special effects, it’s more than just a show – it’s a thrilling reminder of how innovation shaped the past.
Of course, no visit to the museum would be complete without venturing underground. Grab yourself a hard hat and climb aboard the mine train for a guided tour into the mountainside. You’ll feel the rumble beneath your feet as the train clatters into an old haulage tunnel, just like miners did decades ago. Then, walk through the chambers on foot, discovering how miners drilled, blasted, and hauled rock out of the mountainside using tools that ranged from hand-held drills to compressed air machinery. Along the way, you’ll learn how mining techniques and safety standards have changed dramatically over time – from the gruelling, labour-intensive methods of the early 1900s to the more advanced and regulated practices seen today.

And for those dreaming of striking it rich – there’s gold in these hills! While Britannia was primarily a copper mine, gold was also discovered here, and visitors can try their luck with gold panning at the museum’s interactive station. Any treasure you find is yours to keep, making for a great souvenir and a fun hands-on activity for kids and adults alike.
Celebrating 50 years of discovery
In honour of its 50th anniversary, the Britannia Mine Museum is unveiling a special limited-time summer exhibit, A Museum’s Journey, launching May 17th and running through September.
