Spectral Evolution introduces oreXplorerTM
Looking for gold, copper, nickel, lithium, and rare earth? This portable spectrometer and EZ-ID mineral identification software allows you to identify more than 1,100 minerals in seconds. You can explore more territory and make more informed decisions on where to drill to maximize exploration outcomes. Used in the core shack, you can map alteration and eliminate unnecessary assays on cores that show no potential, reduce the time logging takes, and build a digital archive of your results. All instruments are designed for field work with a rugged chassis, no moving optical parts, and metal-clad fibre optic cable that’s field replaceable. They feature one-touch operation with auto-dark current and auto-exposure. Communications include wireless Bluetooth and USB connection.
Better data collection from Hazardous Areas
SKF has gained hazardous area approval for its QuickCollect sensor, which collects vibration and temperature data. The new approval, to both European and International standards, allows the sensor to be used in places that would previously have required a “hot work” permit.
The certification opens up applications in a range of sectors, including the petrochemicals, mining, and marine industries. It also brings digitalization of data into hazardous areas, which up to now is a relative rarity. The sensor is certified to both the international IECEx and European ATEX standards, for use in Zone 1 hazardous areas. In addition, it is approved for CSA Class I, Division 2, making it suitable for certain applications in North America.


Radio remote control from GHH
Safety first in mining and tunneling – for this reason the German machine manufacturer GHH is pushing the use of radio remote controls wherever it suits the application. Its T-RX100J model is particularly light, comparatively inexpensive, and also works with other OEM equipment.
The T-RX100J model can be used to control heavy equipment by radio remote, from a safe distance, including load haul dumpers, dump trucks, and drilling rigs. It is recommended for use in areas where the operator would be exposed to increased danger. Some key applications include sublevel stoping, because of rock instability, as well as block cave, due to the potential for rock burst.
A special feature is the tilt sensor. If the control unit tilts unexpectedly (e.g. because the operator falls), the “dead man” switch stops the machine. The degree of response can be changed to meet individual requirements. The safety circuit also triggers if the radio connection is interrupted. Communication with the machine is digital and therefore highly stable. For failure protection, the RRC uses twin processors with self-diagnosis function. A large emergency stop switch is located in the middle of the console: The overall ergonomics are exemplary.
Nokia, CENGN, and NORCAT to power mining innovation with private wireless network
In March 2020, Nokia announced that it has joined forces with CENGN and NORCAT to install and operate a private LTE/4.9G wireless connectivity network in NORCAT’s Underground Centre. NORCAT and CENGN will serve as a hub for the future of mining technology, while Nokia furthers its commitment towards advancing worldwide mining innovation.
The three parties have collaborated to deploy network connectivity at the NORCAT Underground Centre. NORCAT enables start-ups, small/medium enterprises and international companies to develop, test, and demonstrate innovative and emerging technologies in their operating mine. It is a destination for miners from around the world to see, train on and understand emerging technologies that are poised to transform the global mining industry.

Superior unveils new model Cone Crusher
Superior Industries, Inc., a U.S.-based manufacturer and global supplier of bulk material processing and handling systems, added a new model to its line of Patriot® Cone Crushers – the P500. The P500 model Patriot Cone Crusher is engineered to operate most effectively at 500 horsepower (350 kW). Other specifications unique to the P500 include a head diameter of 59 inches (1,500 mm), maximum feed opening of 13.5 inches (343 mm), and closed side settings from 3/8 to two inches (10 to 50 mm).
Notable features of the P500 model cone include:
- Inverted or reverse design of tramp relief cylinders ensures the hydraulic seals are not exposed to contamination during operation.
- Tramp relief system designed with fewer accumulators for less maintenance. An automatic pressure relief valve means additional protection.
- Universal crushing chamber design requires no major, time-consuming change-outs when transitioning from secondary to tertiary applications.
- If loss of clamping pressure, counterclockwise countershaft rotation causes crusher to open rather than turn down, which can cause significant damage.
